What a Glorious Day! I finally rid myself of the superficially ugly Nokia N8. I never thought I could sell this but I did. Though it maybe great that I sold it, there are things to dislike about the move. Prominent ones are:
·         I Never Got a chance to finish the Symbian Experience Week.
·         I planned to do a crazy review about it on the last day, sadly this would be impossible.
·         I sold it at a super bargain(Bought for P3800 Sold for P3000).
·         In the two short days I was with the phone, I grew to be attached to it.

Unlike the scammer who sold me the phone, I was completely honest with the buyer, I even confirmed him if he was really going to buy and if he has seen the pictures. Luckily, he said yes! He bidded for 2500 but I said no thanks he asked for 2700 but I said 3k was my last price. So we had a deal. Mabait si Kuya understanding siya, and I was as honest as can be as possible to avoid problems. Ayokong manloko, kahit naloko ako. I won't risk my honor for a measly P800. I gave him complete honesty with the unit. Madali mabawi ang pera, ang dignidad hindi. (AKALAIN MONG INSTILL NA SA DUGO KO THOMASIAN VALUES) :)))))

Luckily for me, this was a day when the class was so boring I had a chance to fiddle with the device’s Settings, Browsing, Gaming and Camera. I think these are few of the major points that needed attention and by completeing the aforementioned points, I can say the Symbian Experience reached 80%. So without further ado, here comes the Final Day of the Symbian Experience! Enjoy Guys!

Friends’ Feedback

Can You See the Earth Bulge? LOL
For a group of undergrads in their early twenties, vanity shots never go out of style. Having my Nokia N8 proves it. As our Review Class ended, I whipped out my Nokia N8 and took snapshots from PERC to Chicboy near Padre Noval. I had a funny shot which showed the Earth Bulge(Tummy) of my friend (Lavyu Charles HAHAHA). The Nokia N8’s amazing camera was able to zoom on it and gave us a laugh or two. The shots went on before, while and after eating. Nokia N8’s camera is still, undoubtedly, one of the best today.

CHICBOY ORDER

The Experience

Yesterday(June 25), I installed Games on my Nokia N8, they were Plants vs Zombies, Temple Run 2, NOVA 3, Iron Man 3, Bejeweled, Metal Slug, Hero of Sparta and The Dark Knight Rises. All of them maybe laggy but its amazing how Nokia N8 still gets support from Developers.

Sure Temple Run 2 was a cheap and annoying Rip-off (Chinese/Japanese shit), but the others were gold. Hero of Sparta is a good looking Action Adventure Game with great controls and Plants VS Zombies was just amazing! NOVA 3 and Batman maybe platformers but it was entertaining enough to kill some minutes on the road. Heck, Iron Man 3 was better on Symbian than it is on Android! NO KIDDING! For a gaming device, I have overly underestimated the Nokia N8 and was actually filled with nostalgic fun and excitement! Want to get games? Head on to Nokia N8 Fanclub now!

Aside from gaming, I briefly used the phone to browse the Net, it was as expected, slow and laggy, but it was able to play Be Careful With My Heart on YouTube! It’s still bearable to some but, honestly, not for me.

The settings also give you a nostalgic feel as it very much looks like a beefed and touchscreenitized Symbian S60v3 Settings.

As mentioned earlier, the Camera is just amazing, here are some of my Lime Green Nokia N8 final shots. Enjoy!

CONCLUSION

Nokia N8 is a three year old phone, and by today’s standards it looks small and fat with resolution way behind. I don’t know why but as bad as it may seem by today’s standards, it still looks like an exquisite and elegant phone, its amazing on how three years did little to demolish the feel of holding a God Phone three years ago. Try holding a Samsung Galaxy S2 now and you will feel more outdated than holding a Nokia N8.

Reminiscing aside, and putting it into everyday use, N8 may not give you the same flexibility and apps Android can give but it has enough to get you through a day with style. For simplistic people, this can be a good choice for you. Nokia N8 has stood against the test of time and will provide you with the ones which are truly important! Here’s a run-down of Nokia N8’s performance based on my Three Day Experience.

·         Audio Quality – Definitely better than all of the rebranded phones I have tried, Stereo Widening and Loudness is a great touch

·         Video Playback – Not able to play mkv files and shows problems on bigger files.

·         Browsing- Tolerable, but shows weakness and lags

·         Response- Nokia has to show its age somehow, this is where it is prominent. Very laggy

·         Gaming – Not Android or iOS many but there are lots of Gem left on its tank

·         Camera – Simply one of the best today. See the pics to appreciate

I commend Nokia for making such a wonderful phone! In conclusion, I dub thee a Norman’s Randoms/ PowerBondSeven Golden Thumbs Up of Approval!

Today marks the second day of my Symbian Experience project, since I have no classes today I think I will have a better chance of appreciating and covering nooks and crannies of the phone. Today, I tackled the phone’s Music and Video Playback much extensively. Without further ado, here is The Symbian Experience Day 2!

The Experience

File Transfer 8MBps

To elongate this blog, let me share something with you guys. When I first got this phone, it had Symbian Anna. Hours after, I could not bear with the slow interface and I decided to upgrade it into Belle, and the experience was undoubtedly better. Today I tinkered with the device and tried to install some apps, Nokia always had a quirky way of app installation but its file transfer is definitely very fast at about 8MBps. As mentioned yesterday, Music Playback is one of this phone’s strong suit, playing those songs that uses the Stereo is a joy and higher Bit Rate song sound much better here than playing them on other phones. (Better than rebranded phones and HTC Google Nexus One). Though I have to point out, as good as the music is, Nokia N8’s stock music player has a big flaw. And that is the lack of search button. SEARCH is of huge importance to me, as I have 5GB 900 songs, it’s almost impossible to find what you are looking for just by scrolling. I have tried installing other music apps but TTPod, my Android Favourite, cannot be installed unless I hack my phone which I will NEVER do for the time being. Ever since Nokia’s Music Player on my N86, only TTPod has the power to search for a song and then play another song. Most Music players out there stop playing after the song you searched is finished. I expected Nokia N8 to have the same power but no! It’s very annoying to whip out my phone to search it manually every time. I installed TuneWiki but it takes forever to boot up and requires me to have an account. I want a hassle free player with search. Is that too much to ask Nokia? Moving on, Nokia N8’s Stock music player feature 3 options which can give you a unique experience, Loudness, which is self-explanatory, Stereo Widening, slightly attenuates voice but makes better use of the song and the phone’s Stereo and play via Radio which makes your phone an FM Transmitter. When using this feature, turn on your radio and turn into an unused frequency. Tuning into station like 101.9, 101.1 or the likes is extremely useless as their signals can kick the N8’s transmission even if it is latched to the radio.

The Simpsons 170MB AVI

The OC 300MB AVI

Naruto 300MB 720p MKV

Acong Talonga 300MB WMV

Family Guy 84MB MP4

After music playing, I now moved on into Video Playback, again, I was not able to install any other Video player due to my unhacked N8 so I am still stuck with the Stock, as with android, baring the Note Series, stock video players tend to be shit but Nokia N8’s stock does a pretty decent job. Opening the Videos, you see a list of your videos, if your porn I unhidden expect to see it here LOL. It has two tabs, your videos and web where you can download movies. The option button brings you Sort By, Mark Multiple Videos, User Guide and Exit. I put different types of video on my N8, Digimon (mkv), The OC (300MB AVI), Acong Talonga (300MB WMV File GO WATCH IT NOW!), Family Guy (83MB mp4), Amnesia Girl (700MB AVI) and Naruto (315MB 720p mkv). Surprisingly, 4 out of 6 worked and you probably guessed which two did not work. The MKV files. Honestly, I did not think it would be able to play Family guy but it did. Digimon played the video but did not play the audio and Naruto suffered Vice-verse Digimon. Overall, the video playback by today’s standard is fair but I you have to know that skipping to a different time sometimes result to a long loading time. Sound is very good also, especially on loudspeaker. Oh yeah, I watched a 20-Simpson episode on loudspeaker and the battery is still at 98%. BEAT THAT ANDROID.

As the day ends, I can say Nokia N8 is shaping up to still be a good phone for today especially for Multimedia Playback the amazing battery life is something which will attract those looking for a phone built to last for days. I have watched about 6 hours of Simpsons today, and the battery is still at a beefy 57%. Definitely impressive. From 100% last10pm(June 24). Still I am annoyed on how this phone looks. I’m sorry if I keep bringing its cosmetics up but you have to understand how important cosmetics is in the world of buy and sell, its ugliness will force me to drop its price near desperation even though its functioning properly! Honestly, the ‘It’s not on the outside’ shit is not applicable to phones. Better looking will always be better every day.

UNNECESSARY RAMBLINGS

There comes a time in everyone’s life that we make a stupid mistake. I have had a fair share of stupidity but none may trump this latest one. There I was scanning for a Nokia N8, it was my dream phone back then and I really wanted to try one out. I found one on the second hand market which indicated a 98% Smoothness. I asked for a discount but he did not want my price so I moved one, but he kept bugging me to the point that he agreed to my price and agreed to my meetup. That moment I sensed something fishy. The package was unit only. When he said he agreed to my meetup and price he immediately texted me:

Buyer: ‘Sige munoz papunta nako’ (ok lets meet at munoz I’m on my way)

I was surprised, I did not even confirm, but since he had a relatively good feedback, I went to Munoz. And that was when the catastrophic clusterfuck began. They were two big bodied person and when the unit is shown Holy Fuck it was as ugly as the Seller! Maybe even uglier! I tested the unit and it was working fine but when I got to the camera, I asked him how to activate the front cam and he did not know. BULLSHIT. I admit it was my mistake for getting the unit amidst the Fail seller. It’s just too sad. As of now I’m quitting buying units from untrusted sellers and next time I will have the guts to back out of a deal. Charge to experience nalang. The unit I got was working properly except for the non-functioning front camera which still does not work amidst the Flashing of Symbian Belle. SAD SAD SAD.

Anyways, instead of wallowing and crying, I know someday I will be a successful Electronics and Communication Engineer or a College Engineering Science Teacher, I know I will get the money I lost back in time. Tiwala lang. in addition to a positive outlook in the future, I decided to use the phone instead of wasting money. For this week I will give you a daily short experience of the phone. And without further ado this is it! The Symbian Experience Day 1!

Friends’ Feedback

Day one is probably the most critical day of all, I initially had no intention of showing this horrendous looking marvel to my friends but my loud mouth and braggadocian attitude did not contain it for long. I showed it to my friends and I was relieved by their reception, as ugly as the unit was the greeting was filled with praise like ‘ UYY AYAN YUNG KAY JEYO DB?’(Hey, this was Jeyo’s phone, right?)  ‘ITO YUNG DIYOS NA PHONE DATI DB? (This was the God Phone before right).
A little bit of sharing, 3 years ago, when N8 was launched my friend had it and we were all amazed as it had capabilities we never knew smartphones had, his N8 had about three key memories which made me love it, we watched a movie when we had no teacher, through its HDMI and TV-out, it was the source of music when we had a christmas party, PLAY VIA RADIO was badass. And it had an amazing 12MP Camera.
As bad looking as the unit is, it was praised for its prowess and brought nostalgia to us. We were 3rd year college back then, now look at us, unemployed graduates HAHAHAHA.

The Experience

Every day I travel, I use my back up phone as a multimedia entertainment. There is no way I will watch using my Note 2. Today I use N8 and after I got on the jeep, I opened Nokia N8’s video app, and to my great relief it was able to play a 175MB AVI File without any problem. What I noticed was the substantial lag when jumping onto a different time. Browsing and exploring the phone was also a forgettable experience as it is relatively laggy by today’s standards. Typing on the keyboard using QWERTY is good for sadists out there. Fortunately, its alphanumeric keyboard works fine, kind of like using a decade ago’s phones. I took some snapshots along the way and boy is the camera impressive! One thing to remember, NEVER USE THIS PHONE FOR STOLEN SHOTS! Its infrared always activates even if the flash is off. Nevertheless, the image quality is great! The music is also an enjoyable experience as it delivered loud, clear and clean audio with an amazing feature namely Loudness and Stereo Widening, the former is self-explanatory while the latter GREATLY ENHANCES your audio experience especially if you are a stereo geek.

It did not offer anything special but it did get me through the day. Though I still feel saddened on how ugly and battered this phone looks.

Nokia N8! The Super Late Review!

Nokia N8!
The Super Late Review!

When cellular phones came out most, if not all, of us wanted to want one for ourselves. The first phone I had a chance to hold was those bulky Smart Phones, Smart as in Smart the Telecommunications Company. I was not particularly intrigued as I was at a young age back then. The first Cellphone I saw Bosch phone, it had the technology still alive today which is SMS, it had a small screen and it looked similar to a beeper. Unfortunately, I have no idea what it was called. Then came the Giant Nokia, the forgotten 5210 maybe the phone which most of us first saw but already forgotten, it was a trimmed down Smart Phone and it was the phone which paved the way for Nokia’s reign for the subsequent years. The clinching feature? The Game Snake! I may not have any idea how to use a phone back then but I knew how to navigate it to play Snake. Finally at year 2003, I had my very first phone, and it was none other than the all-time favourite Nokia 3310! Back then I did nothing but text my friends and play Space Impact, I was content with it even though at that time phones like 7650 and 6600 were the popular ones and Nokia still dominated the Cellphone arena. If you want to know more about the phones I had and subsequent adventures wait for my Phones throughout my Life blog.

Fast tracking to 2010, it was the start of Nokia’s inevitable decline as Android was coming and iOS was much more entertaining. Back then I had a 5630 but I was deeply in awe with Nokia’s futile pushes in N8. Its design was amazing and it was arguably the best touchscreen phone back then. Ever since, I wanted to have one and finally after three long years, I finally have one! (Though this is just a second hand unit from a deceptive seller.)

Every now and then we do something crazy ad stupid to spice up our life and this purchase maybe one I will remember for all time. Since I like to look on the brighter side of things, even though I see no lighter side in this one, I came out with the idea to write a review about this phone and try it for a week! So without further delay, I think I kept you long enough, here is the Nokia N8 Review! 3 Years after conception!
NOTE: This review is based from Personal Experience with the phone. This is a dream phone of mine so expect a lot of bias.

1. THE PACKAGE (10 out of 10)

1.1 The BOX and Contents

Out of all the phones I have ever tried in my entire life and in no way am me exaggerating, Nokia N8 has the best package! The box includes your standard staples like Manuals, Headset, USB Cable and Charger but it does not stop there as the package also includes an HDMI and a USB OTG! The inclusion of such package is a big plus! From a different point of view, you can perceive Nokia is going all out with this phone!
Sadly for me, I only got a UNIT ONLY package. SAD.

2. PHONE SUPERFICIALITY (10 out of 10)

As mentioned earlier, I was at complete awe with this phone back then and I still am today, though my unit may not reflect my excitement. THANKS A LOT SCUMBAG! Anger aside, Nokia N8 looks fat by today’s standard but it still has that exquisite high end feel into it. The 12MP Camera is its best Eye Catcher. It has a non-removable battery so it has flaps on the sides for MicroSD and Sim card with the volume rocker, locker and Camera shutter on the other side. There are plenty of colors to choose from and that’s another +1! Most phones today either come in Black or White, ehem iPhone. The build and materials are not too shabby either.
Overall, I think this phone had a lot of work exerted on its design and I think it’s still one of the best looking phones today.

BUT LOOK HOW SHITTY THE UNIT I GOT! I HOPE KARMA GETS YOU!

3. PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

3.1 Display (8.3 out of 10)

Nokia N8 has an nHD AMOLED screen so you can expect good amount of saturation and Display. Though it has a measly 360x640 resolution, it does not look that bad. It actually compares well to some low-ranged branded phones and mid-ranged rebranded phones. As of today, N8 will have trouble competing in terms of display as the technological rush is just phenomenal. I also have here a 2010 HTC Google Nexus One and I will have to give the better display to Nokia N8.

3.2 Multimedia (7.7 out of 10)

Nokia has a knack for Music Playback which can be observed with their line of Xpress Music which, in my experience, does deliver better audio than other phones. Nokia N8 may not be an Xpress phone but it has fared well against today’s phones. The audio quality is great, and the headset included is also great. Using my staple Griffin Caps, it delivered amazing audio output which definitely trumps most rebranded phones out there. Ehem Cherry Mobile. The stock Music Player can probably still pack a punch against today’s branded phones as it features a Loudening and Stereo Widening mode which greatly amplifies music playback. Barring Note 2 and Xperia Z, Nokia N8 still holds a good ground on music department.

As for Video Playback, this maybe its Achilles Heel as the video codec of this phone is very limited, sometimes it plays AVI sometimes it does not, as with my experience, for the first six hours, I could not predict whether what I put will be played or be rejected. Unlike Android, which has MX Player Pro to fill your video gaps, I don’t think N8 has a solution, if it does I’m sure it’s hard to find as Google is not really much help.

Another weak spot of this phone is its browser. Symbian has had critical reception with its unenjoyable browsing experience brought by an uninspired browser. Browsing is a no-no in this phone. Though I do find a use for its horrible browser but you have to stay tuned for the day by day N8 Review.

3.3 Camera (10 out of 10)

This shouldn’t even be asked, N8 has the best camera back then and though there are tons better now, it undeniable that it still fares well against today’s Giants. With respect to rebranded phones, Nokia N8 sweeps the floor and takes them to the cleaners, I’m not exaggerating, and it’s just that good! I will post pictures every day for you to appreciate Nokia N8’s supremacy in the Camera department.
I have to point out as good as N8 can be, this can never be used for Stolen Shots! Why? That damn infrared light always lights up even though the flash is off.

3.4 Gaming (7.9 out of 10)

About a decade ago, having a Symbian system means having a hot gaming system. Gameloft was the way to go as it was the best producers. As of Today, there are still a huge number of games available on the Nokia N8, with new ones being released every now and then but the new releases are just rip-offs like the ‘TEMPLE RUN 2’ on the picture. Make no mistake, its one hell of a gaming machine back then but today, it’s nothing special.

3.5 Speed/User Friendliness/OS (8.0 out of 10)

Nokia N8 runs the Dead Symbian OS, at initial launch it was released with a buggy S60 but Anna and Belle gave it life and better equipment against Androids and iOS phones. Back then N8 was probably the smoothest phone and the 680 MHz Processor and 256MB RAM was to die for. Coming off a huge number of phones, there is no denying that the technology in this phone, even though it was only been about three years, is way past its prime. Expect to experience a lot of lag if ever you want to try this one yourself.

As for user-friendliness, this one definitely shows why it’s dead now. Although it functions well as an ordinary phone, it does not have the feel of freedom. Sure you can hack it, but it’s always risky to do such stuff especially when there is a few to none help when you brick your phone. The amount of apps and games for this one is also very limited unless you hack your phone and unlike today’s Android, it cannot be customized as deeply as you may wish as Symbian is not as open as Android. Sure you can say iOS is also wall-gardened but the support and apps for that OS is about a hundred times bigger.

Finally, telephony and messaging can be a pain to some. As of today, most, if not all, of us prefer a QWERTY keyboard, you can see from this device how abysmal and annoying that experience is. The keys are tiny and there is no way to calibrate the stock keyboard. Of course there is an option to use the alphanumeric keypad which is the smart thing to do. The dialer is an upgraded version of your yesteryear’s Nokia Phone. Call quality is good.

3.6 Battery (9.7 out of 10)

Another stronger suit of Nokia. N8 has an amazing battery life, with almost two hours of video playback, the battery barely dropped. Sadly, if you leave a game open and you don’t exit it eats up your battery like hot knife through butter, the barely nudged battery dropped to about 40% after leaving the game on inside my pocket. Bummer. The battery will still be stress tested so stay tuned!

3.6 Miscellaneous

Hmmm so what does N8 offer that its predecessors did not? From my experience over the past years, N8 was the first useable touchscreen phone I tried and it deserves praise for that. The package is fit for a last push at the top but Symbian’s death was still inevitable. If you are looking for a phone that can play videos and music along with an excellent camera look no further than Nokia N8.

 CONCLUSION

NOKIA’S FINAL SYMBIAN FLAGSHIP! (9.02 Out of 10)

I don’t care if Nokia released a Pureview 808; I believe N8 is their Final Symbian Flagship! Why? Personally, because 808 were released when Symbian was dead, I think it was a wrong move for them to have released it, but what do I know about business. I believe N8 is the last because it had potential to keep the OS alive. Sadly, as mentioned numerous times already, its death did come.
For a three year old phone, you can see how much technology has evolved, the laggy between screens and the continuous improvements on display just continues to amaze. As for functionality, it offers what you need for your everyday life like Texts, Calls, Music, Videos and the occasional Camera, but I don’t think it can give you the same satisfaction as Android and Apple.
Nokia N8 was my dream phone back then, and now that I have it I still think it’s great but it does not have the oomph to make me want to keep it for too long. I only use this phone today as a travel phone.

After having the worst scam and deal of my life, I accepted the fact that this will be a charge to experience type of things. And since I’m a jolly optimistic handsome person, I decide to do a little experiment called the Symbian Experience.

As the name implies I will be using Nokia N8 as my primary travel phone, the previous was the wonderful HTC Google Nexus One. I will be using the Nokia N8 for the whole week and see if Symbian may still have an impact on our life today, and I want to see how much I am going to Miss Android too. I will still use my Galaxy Note 2 but only for calls and text, the rest is up to Nokia N8! Can my ex-dream phone compare with my current powerhouse? Find out on the succeeding entries on my blog!
